The accuracy of ASCAT wind retrievals is determined through various comparisons with moored buoys. The com-5 parisons indicate that the remotely sensed wind speeds and directions agree well with buoy data. The root-mean-squared differences of the wind speed and direction are less than 1.72 m/s and 18 • , respectively. At global scale, ASCAT winds are compared with surface winds derived from QuikSCAT scatterometer. The results confirm the buoy analyses, especially for wind speed ranging between 3 m/s and 20 m/s. For higher 10 wind conditions, ASCAT is biased low. The ASCAT underestimation with respect to QuikSCAT winds is wind speed dependent. The comparisons based on the collocated scatterometer data collected after 17 October 2007 indicate that there are significant improvements compared to previous periods.

Validation and Analysis of Ocean Parameters Using Ascat Data

This project aims to investigate the quality of ASCAT measurements as well as their use for oceanographic purposes. The accuracy of ASCAT retrievals will be mainly based on the use of collocated data from moored buoys, numerical weather prediction models, and satellites. The resulting collocated data will be used to explore the accuracy of the geophysical model function which relates the backsc...

Validation of sea ice motion from QuikSCAT with those from SSM/I and buoy

Arctic sea ice motion for the period from October 1999 to March 2000 derived from QuikSCAT and special sensor microwave/imager (SSM/I) data using the wavelet analysis method agrees well with ocean buoy observations. Results from QuikSCAT and SSM/I are compatible when compared with buoy observations and complement each other. Sea ice drift merged from daily results from QuikSCAT, SSM/I, and buoy...

ASCAT wind quality under high subcell wind variability conditions

The assessment and validation of the quality of satellite scatterometer vector winds is challenging under increased subcell wind variability conditions, since reference wind sources such as buoy winds or model output represent very different spatial scales from those resolved by scatterometers (i.e., increased representativeness error). In this paper, moored buoy wind time series are used to as...

Assessing Global Ocean Wind Energy Resources Using Multiple Satellite Data

Wind energy, as a vital renewable energy source, also plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change. It is therefore of utmost necessity to evaluate ocean wind energy resources for electricity generation and environmental management. Ocean wind distribution around the globe can be obtained from satellite observations to compensate for limited in situ measur...

Assessment and Analysis of QuikSCAT Vector Wind Products for the Gulf of Mexico: A Long-Term and Hurricane Analysis

The northern Gulf of Mexico is a region that has been frequently impacted in recent years by natural disasters such as hurricanes. The use of remote sensing data such as winds from NASA's QuikSCAT satellite sensor would be useful for emergency preparedness during such events. In this study, the performance of QuikSCAT products, including JPL's latest Level 2B (L2B) 12.5 km swath winds, were eva...
